Muhammad Ismail Khan, the former Minister of Energy and Water, lashed out against the national unity government on Sunday, questioning the government's ability to serve the interests of Afghanistan and improve security conditions when, as he claims, the majority of its cabinet is comprised of dual citizens and communists.
Ismail Khan delivered his comments while speaking at an event in Herat commemorating the departure of the Soviets from Afghanistan. "I would like to say here that with 50 percent of cabinet members having dual citizenship, a cabinet consisting of a majority of communists, we cannot expect security in this country," the elderly mujahideen leader said.
Ismail Khan was one of the earliest critics of the cabinet nominees named by the national unity government, reserving his harshest words for those asked to fill the top security posts. Although he has not gone into much detail as to why, specifically, those selected by President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah would be unable to execute their duties effectively, he has made it clear what he would have done differently.
"We want the presence of mujahideen in this government, for the defense and hope of their country," he told the crowd gathered at the event in Herat on Sunday. Islmail Khan did not say whether he envisioned himself, as an influential mujahideen leader, in one of the cabinet positions he claims are filled by undesirables.
